In the commercial construction business, we typically buy a job site saw for each project and use it up during the course of an 18-month job. Though this SawStop ICS53230-52 5 HP 230V 60 Hz Cabinet Saw with 52-Inch Industrial T-Glide Fence System is the most expensive model made by the company, we moved it to the bottom of our list because other cabinet saws received better reviews from customers. This saw comes with a 52-inch T-Glide fence system that helps you set the size and angle of each cut, and this system has a lockdown feature to keep the wood from moving.
The accuracy and safety of any given saw is dependent upon the blade being parallel to the rip fence. Since we tested the amount of difference in parallelism between the saw blade and the miter slot in the previous test, we need only to see if the miter slot is parallel to the rip fence to see if the saw has a parallel relationship between the blade and the rip fence.
The scales that indicate the width of cut fall into one of two categories: continuous and separate. Of the seven we’re reviewing, DeWalt, Ridgid and Rockwell are continuous. You simply line up the fence with the desired measurement. The other four best table saw options—Bosch, Craftsman, Ryobi and Porter-Cable—require you to lock the fence in a specific position on fully extended rails, and read the dimension on a separate scale. One of the biggest issues and potential hazards when working with table saws is kickback. Table saw kickback occurs when wood is ejected from the saw at extremely high speed. Brad – Won’t be anytime soon. I’d offer a few thoughts though on this topic. First off, for this type of testing it’s just not feasible for us to do any long term testing that would be required to evaluate your concern. You’re right, most jobsite table saws have less than perfect fence systems. The rack-and-pinion style that DEWALT, Hitachi and some others use are far more accurate over the long haul than the “clamp” style. Lastly, for lots of guys they are transitioning to track saws for work that requires a really precise cuts or they cut critical pieces in the shop. We put our hands on 10 of the most popular table saws and tested them for accuracy, power, and functionality. It took some time, but we have some fairly conclusive results. Table saws are undeniably the kings of rip cuts on the jobsite and in shops. The concept is simple: Place a motor below a solid table to turn a blade somewhere in the 4000-5000 RPM range through the surface and watch the sawdust fly. The idea may be simple, but the reality is much different. How big should the table be? What size blade should you use? How heavy can you get away with making it? For this shootout, we’re looking specifically to find the best portable jobsite table saw.
The only flaw might be the occasional false detection by the safety system. This will usually only happen if the lumber is wet or it is used primarily in the outdoors. You have to weigh the safety features against the type of work you do. If you are constantly working in wet or damp environments, it might not be worth the headache. If not, it’s 100% worth the benefits!
The differentiating factor is workshop realestate: it takes up nearly 2 square feet less space than its larger, more powerful counterpart, making it ideal for craftsmen with less workspace who don’t need the extra horsepower for cutting heavier hardwood materials. With that in mind, you can likely imagine that hybrid table saws are perfect for those looking for greater power than that offered by a contractor table saw, but don’t fancy paying anything around the price of a cabinet table saw. At the same time, whilst hybrid table saws are nowhere near as portable as some of the aforementioned options, you should still be able to find that they can be transported when necessary. When it comes to the middleman of table saws, that’s a title truly deserved by the hybrid variety. In all, if you’re looking for a bit more power than that offered by a contractor table saw but don’t fancy paying the price of a cabinet variety, this is an option well worth your looking at.
From there, the rest of the saws created a top tier of cutting power that wasn’t mind-blowingly better, but definitely noticeable. It took many cuts back and forth between saws to determine which came out ahead of other because they are so close to each other. Bosch’s REAXX took third place overall with SawStop ever so slightly ahead. Part of that simply came down to the fact that SawStop was a little bit smoother cutting. Coming out on top was Ridgid. There was noticeable vibration compared to Bosch and SawStop here, but it was able to muscle through each cut a little bit better than the other two.
15 Amp Motor – You’ve likely noticed that the power of motor used by DEWALT in their table saws sits at a pretty consistent 15 amp. That’s no surprise though really, when you take into consideration exactly what a 15 amp motor is able to achieve. In all, we’d say that it provides pretty much as much power you’re going to need. What’s more, this power coupled with high precision allows the table saw to easily rip through just about any hardwood. You’d struggle to find a table saw that pumps out quite as much power.
The advent of ever better motive power that came with 19th century developments led to ever more efficient and ever more compact power saws. The first recognizably modern table saws date to the latter decades of that century. The latest advance in table saw safety is a feature that stops the spinning blade when it senses the presence of tissue, such as a finger or forearm. A company called SawStop was the first to offer this technology, and currently, it holds the exclusive right to sell saws with this feature in the United States. (Bosch introduced a portable table saw with blade-stopping technology in 2016, but was forced to take it off the market after a successful patent-infringement suit by SawStop.) In terms of the safety features that you’re going to want to look for in your table saw, one of the most prominent includes a flesh sensor. This is basically designed so that the table saw will immediately stop operating after 0.01 seconds of coming into contact with flesh. This means that if the worst should happen and you come into danger as a result of using a table saw, the damage will be kept to a minimal. As you can likely imagine, this particular safety feature will push up the price of the table saw by a small amount, but it’s definitely a feature that’s worth happening if you value your safety whilst using power tools.
The old designs of table saws did not have the angled capability that newer models have now with their ability to have the blades angled at 45 and 90 degrees. Before these upgraded styles, the table itself had to be tilted which made cutting extremely unsafe. The new styles that accommodate angling the blade for the beveled cuts make things much easier and safer for the user.
It’s worth remembering that contractor table saws are still going to be pretty portable because they’re designed to be used by contractors. That being said, unlike portable table saws, they don’t necessarily fold up into a compact position. This is largely because contractors tend to have the facilities needed in order to transport a larger bit of kit. The extra space that they take up in comparison to a portable table saw means that contractor table saws are able to offer a greater level of power and precision. Both of these points further support the fact that contractor table saws sit in the middle ground.

A 50 rpm deviation at those speeds is approximately 1% variance which is well within the tolerance we should expect from taking the readings at a precise instant of time. The meters were in constant motion and we took the reading off of a single video frame that represented our determination of no-load speeds. We report them as our instruments showed them. 1% is acceptable.
